The Blue Caves are another famous sight located in the north of the island. The unusual caves were discovered in 1897, with the largest cave being called Blue Grotto. Apart from the natural arches that have been carved out by erosion, these caves are famous for the colour of the water in its deepest hollows, a deep azure colour which is most striking in the morning when the light is at its brightest. The colours of the caves are spectacular and have to be seen to be believed. The area is also good for snorkelling.
